Founded in 1958, the College of Sciences aims to cultivate first-class science talents and establish a world-leading academic highland, with a vision of building a distinctive, world-class fundamental and research-oriented college, committed to cultivating outstanding and innovative science talents with cutting-edge academic view, solid foundation and global vision. The College consists of 3 first-level disciplines including Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, all ranked stably among ESI global 1%, while Chemistry has moved into global 1‰. The teaching staff at the college are mainly composed of first-class young and middle-aged teachers. And among the 355 full-time teachers, 105 are professors, including 21 national level talents such as well as academicians of the American Academy of Sciences, and national JQ talents, forming a high-level and interconnected innovative talent team system. There are 1069 undergraduates, 1014 postgraduates of master programs, and 252 postgraduates of doctoral programs at the college.

The College consists of 8 academic units, namely, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Physics, the Department of Chemistry, and Institute for Sustainable Energy, Nano-Science & Technology Research Center, Institute of Materiobiology, Quantum Technology Research Institute, and Innovation Institute of Carbon Neutral, holding a talent-cultivation system with complete education levels covering bachelor, master and doctorate programs. There are 2 national postdoctoral research stations and 3 first-level disciplines with doctorate degree certification (mathematics, physics and chemistry); 3 first-level disciplines with master degree certification (mathematics, physics, chemistry) and 1 master degree program for statistics; 3 national first-level undergraduate subjects (mathematics and applied mathematics, applied physics, and applied chemistry), 1 municipal first-level undergraduate subjects (information and computational science), and 1 Ministry of Education Specialty Subject (electronic information science and technology).

Its affiliated research units include 9 national and provincial research platforms: International Science and Technology Cooperation Base of Nanocomposite Functional Materials, granted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Engineering Center of Materials Composite and Advanced Dispersion, granted by the Ministry of EducationShanghai Institute of Mathematics and Systems Science, Shanghai Key Laboratory of High Temperature Superconducting, Shanghai Engineering Research Center of New Materials and Application for Resources and Environment, Shanghai Professional Technology and Service Platform for Advanced Composite Material Design and Manufacturing, Shanghai Technical Service Center for Advanced Ceramics Structure Design and Precision Manufacturing, Shanghai New Materials and Application Industry-University-Research Cooperation Center, and National Joint Innovation Center for Applied Mathematics Shanghai University Branch. There are also 3 provincial level talent training experimental bases - Shanghai Youth Innovation Practice Workstation for Mathematics, Shanghai Municipal Physics Experiment Teaching Center, and Shanghai Municipal Chemical Experiment Teaching Center.

In the previous years, the college has undertaken more than 200 national level research projects, including National Key R&D Scheme projects, key projects of NSFC, NSFC programs for distinguished young scholars, NSFC programs for excellence young scientists, important projects of NSFC, and NSFC Original Exploration Scheme projects. High level academic articles have been published at Nature, Science and other key journals. Teams at the college received 1 second prize for National Technological Inventions, 3 first prizes for Shanghai Municipal Scientific and Technological Progress, and nearly 20 other provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological awards. The Journal “Electrochemical Energy Reviews” created a “SHU Mode” of constructing a high-level journal.

In recent years, the college also received outstanding teaching achievements, including 4 second prizes for the National Teaching Achievement Awards and 10 provincial level teaching achievement awards. The college has conducted extensive international exchanges and cooperation with foreign universities and institutions such as the University of Oxford in the UK, the University of Toronto in Canada, Hokkaido University in Japan, and the University of Kentucky in the United States. Students at the College received such high-level national and international awards as the Gold Prize of the China Int’l Competition “Internet+” University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Special Prize of the National Innovation Designing Competition of Chemical Experiments for University Student, Special Prize of the Mathematics Contest in Modeling at the USA, Special Prize of the National “Challenge Cup” for University Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works, First Prize in National College Student Mathematics Competition, and First Prize in China Graduate Electronic Design Competition. Our graduates are particularly favored by employers for their solid foundation of knowledge and skills, strong adaptability, innovative spirit, and strong development potential.
